The word ‘Sassenach’ is derived from the Scottish Gaelic word ‘Sasunnach’, literally meaning 'Saxon', and was originally used by Highland Gaelic speakers to refer to non-Gaelic speaking Scottish Lowlanders.
It then evolved into its more common usage, meaning an English person, or someone from England.
